Travel around Samogitia is always remembered for its wonderful and unique landscape. Hills, depressions, streams, swamps, lakes with islands and peninsulas, forests – various naturally formed nature of Samogitia will pamper you with spectacular views. It is therefore very unexpected to discover the Cold War Museum on a trip. A menacing and touching atmosphere with incredibly interesting museum objects perfectly reflects the dark side of the country’s history. The museum, in contrast to the stunningly beautiful nature, will greatly enliven and balance everyone’s journey. The Cold War Museum is located near Plateliai Lake, in the wooded plateau of Plokštinė. The museum’s exposition is located in the former Soviet missile base, one of the first ballistic missile launch complexes in the Soviet Union. It was a powerful Soviet nuclear weapons group in Lithuania during the Cold War, capable of destroying the entire European continent. Four SS-4 ballistic missiles, housed in a 30-meter-deep shaft, were aimed at different Western European cities. Examples of combat missile equipment and other military weapons, authentic weapons, and various military equipment are on display in the exhibition halls of the museum. The museum is rich in photographs, graphics, audio and video materials about the Cold War that lasted for half a century, the secret organization of Soviet armaments, the consequences of the war for Lithuania, Europe and the whole world, and the outcome that could have happened. For example, a video installation depicts an imitation of a nuclear explosion and its consequences.
The only exposition of this kind in Europe awaits everyone in Samogitia, 24 km north of Plungė.
